How Many Fingers?

by Ray Reuter on June 6, 2013

There’s this wonderful scene in one of my favorite movies, Patch Adams, where Arthur Mendelson asks Patch to count how many fingers he sees. Arthur holds up four fingers and challenges Patch to look beyond the fingers!  When Patch looks beyond the obvious, he sees eight fingers. Arthur states … “If you focus on the problem, you can’t see the solution. A change in perspective and focus causes something new to appear.”

When I talk on the topic of ATTITUDE, I challenge people to *rescript* their attitude. One of the techniques is to change your focus — to look beyond the obvious or “default” point-of-view.

For starters, do I focus on …How Many Fingers

  • anger or forgiveness?
  • myself or others?
  • problems or opportunities?
  • drama or humor?
  • taking or giving?
  • envy / jealousy about what I don’t have or gratitude for what I do have?
  • scarcity or abundance?
  • yesterday / tomorrow or today?
  • what’s in it for me or what’s in it from me?
  • what I can’t control or what I can control?
  • comfort or adventure?
  • “crap” or fertilizer?
  • half empty or half full?
  • play not to lose or play to win?

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes.
— Marcel Proust

With new eyes, see what no one else sees. See what many choose not to see. See the whole world unfettered each day!
