The Unforeseen

by Ray Reuter on February 16, 2017

Dear Lord, I do not know what will happen to me today. I only know that nothing will happen that was not foreseen by You, and directed to my greater good from all eternity.

This is the first line of the Morning Offering prayer that I have been praying every morning since the beginning of the year. Recently, this prayer played out in dramatic fashion as my wife had unanticipated surgery which certainly was unforeseen. It knocked my “routine” off track including blog writing. So I thought this prayer would be good place to restart. There are several powerful elements …

  • I do not know what will happen to me today. That is so true … for me, for you. Of course I have my plans for the day, which deceive me into thinking I “do know”what will happen. That I possess the knowledge of God.
  • … nothing will happen that was not foreseen by You. God does know — that is why God is God. I AM WHO I AM. All knowing, transcendent.
  • … directed to my greater good from all eternity. All, everything — what is seen and unseen — is directed to your and my greater good. Maybe not immediately, but definitely for the long-term, as in all eternity. Not bad … GOOD!

How comforting! When we fully believe and trust God’s goodness, the process is complete and reinforced. If all is GOOD, if all is GIFT … Who cares what happens today?! I can let go of trying to control and worry about what will happen. We assume a posture of openness — to be OPEN to the GREATER GOOD of the UNFORESEEN.
