Work on YOUR Business

by Ray Reuter on August 31, 2017

Many have heard the advice to work ON our business not just IN our business. The emphasis is always on the word “ON.” I totally agree with this intention, and I want to take a moment to emphasize a different word … “YOUR.” Work on YOUR business.

Byron Katie notes that there are three different businesses we can be in: Our own business, someone else’s business, or God’s business. If we want to enhance our success and minimize our suffering, the wise thing to do is to focus exclusively on OUR / YOUR business.

You may have noticed that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to control someone else! No matter how hard you try, no matter how much effort and energy you put into it, no matter your best intentions … there is not a button you can push (or keep pushing) and change someone. Are you aware of how you suffer when you focus on what other people should be doing. Therefore, stay out of their business and quit trying.

And that brings us to someone’s business that is even more I M P O S S I B L E to control — GOD’s business. Life happens. Tragedy strikes. Things go south. Rejection, defeat, loss, disappointment. That stuff. God’s business. Often incomprehensible — yet God’s business. Definitely not within your or my direct control. Period. Trying to fight it welcomes suffering. Surrender & Yield.

The bottom line … Focus on what IS within your control: YOUR BUSINESS.

How YOU show up in the world. The thoughts you allow yourself to think. The actions you decide to take. The habits you decide to build. The heroic quests you decide to pursue. The love you choose to embody.

Other people’s business. God’s business. Your business.

Whose business are YOU in?
