“But Jude, Larry is in the back yard and not close to you!”
____________________
Recently, Jude’s default respond to most any mishap is, “Larry hit me.” Now, sometimes that is true. And, many times Larry is more than an arm’s length away. Jude has discovered that this “go to response” has served him well. While humorous and amusing, it made me wonder about our go-to responses. When things don’t go quite right, according to plan … when we encounter mishaps and obstacles … when we experience a setback … what is our Larry-hit-me go-to response?! Some possibilities including mine mixed in …
- No one appreciates me.
- I’m not good enough.
- The economy is different, harder, _________.
- I don’t have time. I’ve got too much going on.
- There are no standards.
- Today’s generation is too soft, entitled, _________.
- People care only about themselves.
- I can’t please everyone.
- I’m too tired. I’m wore out.
- I can’t.
Like Jude … “sometimes” your response may be true. And many (most?) times, nobody has hit you — you’ve simply responded by default. Never forget that you and I always have the power to choose our response to any situation. Often the only person that hits us is ourself.
The greatest power that a person possesses is the power to choose. —J. Martin Kohe
